Chapter 4

There was a lot of common knowledge things discussed in chapter 4, but there was still a couple of new things that I learned.

With the copyright section, I didn’t know things like you can’t copyright a recipe, but you can copyright a collection of recipes. Seems weird to me. Also learned about how long copyrights last which I was unaware of.

I had never heard of a digital object identifier before reading this chapter. I can’t even recall ever seeing one in passing like you would a book’s ISBN number. I have however cited web pages using the MLA format last year for a speech class.

I couldn’t tell you the last time I wrote a research paper, so using online references like Bartelby.com and the Guttenberg Project is foreign to me. I do use the Internet Archive for their live music archive, but everything else mentioned there is something I’ve never touched.

Getting audio and video off the web. That’s another one I think everyone does today. I feel like everyone has at least one subscription to a streaming service, whether it’s audio or video. Even if they don’t, I’m sure they use YouTube in some capacity. One service I use year round is Nugs.net. They have soundboard recordings of most of the bands I listen to, and they also do live streams of concerts if the venues connection can handle it. Well worth the $99 a year I pay for it.

I’m old enough to have spent significant time using AIM in my youth, trying to come up with the perfect away message and all of that. I’ve never used ICQ or IRC. Obviously I’m using text messages along with everyone else in the world in the year 2024.

I’m not a huge fan of social media. I’ve used Facebook in the past but got rid of it about 5 years ago. I still have a Twitter account to follow beat writers of my favorite sports teams, but that place has gone off the rails the past year.
